National Apprenticeship Day: Shaping the Future of UK Engineering

National Apprenticeship Week is a time to celebrate the contributions apprentices make to industry, wider society, and our long-term economic resilience in the UK. This week-long annual event highlights the importance of apprenticeships in developing skilled professionals, especially in engineering and manufacturing.

The Role of Atlantic Pumps in Apprenticeships

Atlantic Pumps, a leading solutions provider of industrial pumping solutions, actively supports apprenticeship programs to cultivate engineering talent. Over the years, the company has partnered with the AMRC Training Centre, providing young engineers with hands-on experience and structured training to boost their career.

Apprenticeships offer an effective pathway to bridge the skills gap in the engineering sector, a vital backbone of the UK and one that holds the keys to solving the challenges of today, and tomorrow. At Atlantic Pumps, we are passionate about engineering a greener, more resilient, and prosperous future for all. Our actions are focused on improving outcomes from primary industrial process activities such as quarrying, ‘heavy-side’ manufacturing, and critical infrastructure services, such as water and wastewater resources. Innovating to reduce energy consumption, cut resource wastage and pollution risk, while maximizing circulatory and sustainability requires new approaches and fresh, collaborative thinking; features our apprentices have in abundance!

Atlantic Pumps apprenticeship initiative ensures that trainees gain valuable industry knowledge while working on real-world engineering and mechanical projects within a supportive team.

In 2025, Atlantic Pumps, in association with the Institute of Quarrying is releasing a new online training program aimed at pump users, maintenance staff, and fluid system designers and specifiers. This video series is currently being filmed for launch later this year.

In addition to our own apprenticeship program, we are also proud to be upskilling our client’s apprentices by providing on-site pump training. Watch this space for a soon-to-be-published video showing our joint-work with H+H, a leading manufacturer of construction products, and AMRC.

AMRC Training Centre: A Hub for Engineering Talent

The AMRC Training Centre, affiliated with the University of Sheffield, plays a crucial role in shaping the future of engineering apprentices. It provides high-quality training and connects apprentices with top employers, including Atlantic Pumps, McLaren, Boeing, and other leading regional engineering names.

By combining high-quality academic learning with practical experience, AMRC helps apprentices build a strong foundation in engineering. The centre is also instrumental in supporting businesses by ensuring that apprentices meet industry standards and are given strong academic support.

Why Apprenticeships Matter

  • Hands-on Learning: Apprentices gain practical experience while earning a wage. They benefit from time spent at the AMRC and time spent working at local employers such as Atlantic Pumps.
  • Industry-Relevant Skills: Programs are designed to meet the needs of modern engineering companies. With Universities and Colleges working closer together, cross-learning is encouraged and training is kept relevant to the ever-evolving needs of modern industries.
  • Career Progression: Many apprentices move into full-time employment with their training providers. After gaining valuable experience working with co-workers, related departments, and often customers during their apprenticeship, they can ‘hit the ground running’ and fast-track their career.

National Apprenticeship Week highlights the significance of apprenticeships in driving innovation and closing the skills gap through inspiring and training the next generation of engineers and problem-solvers.
