Peveril Install Multi-Product Bagging Silos
Our client was asked by a key customer of theirs to supply over 20 different limestone grades in 25kg and bulk bags. This required a silo and bagging facility inside a new building that could cope with densities ranging from 700kg/m³ to 1,400kg/m³, and allow quick changing of bag size.
The ability to quickly switch the silos from grade to grade, and between the two bag sizes was essential. Rapid clean-down between grades was important for these custom-packaged, high-quality products to allow a fast and cost-effective turnaround.
Three 50m³ storage silos were required to meet the demand, expected to require approximately 15,000 tonnes of throughput annually.
Searching for a silo/bagging equipment specialist that shares their flexibility and responsiveness, they chose Peveril Machinery to take on the design, fabrication and installation of the new system.
Peveril analysed the product range’s annual and seasonal demand forecasts, which revealed that flexibility between packaging sizes and grades was key.
Peveril’s custom silo and hopper design switches between feeding two central 25kg bagging machines and a bulk ‘ton’ bagging one.
To preserve the purity of product grade, good material flow was essential to ensure proper silo emptying between batches. Even with careful production planning, the range of product grades means a thorough silo clean-down once a day to every week, depending on customer orders. Thorough emptying and ease of clean-out were therefore essential.
The silos had to be installed within the building as it was being built. The roofline had been limited by planning, so the maximum internal silo height was fixed at only 13m. Peveril overcame this by making the silos wider and shorter than standard – 4m x 13 m, to accommodate the volume requirements.
Peveril worked with the builders, navigating design changes to both silo and roof design. Detailed communication with all parties resulted in a perfect installation, with sufficient room for silo inspection and maintenance.
Talking about the project, Peveril Sales Director Lachlan Macdonald said “With the height constraint, a standard-size silo wouldn’t work. Thankfully, we have our “stubby” silo design which is perfect for such situations. Adaptable to height, the Peveril Stubby is a hybrid between tall upright silos and horizontal models, offering the advantages of both formats.”
