Case Studies

H+H / University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre

This site visit shows how a successful three-way partnership between a leading manufacturer of high-performance construction materials, H+H UK Ltd, abrasive equipment manufacturer and supplier, Atlantic Pumps, and world-class training provider, AMRC Training Centre, delivers long-term gains in industrial process pump systems.

H+H upcycles coal ash into high-strength, thermally efficient, low-density aircrete blocks by reacting the ash in a slurry with lime, cement, aluminum, and other materials. With many of the ingredients being highly abrasive, pump reliability is a key focus at their Pollington site, so they work closely with Atlantic Pumps on pump selection, hydraulic system design, operator training, and expert pump maintenance support.

The AMRC Training Centre, part of the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, trains the next generation of engineers through apprenticeships with many of the region’s most innovative and advanced engineering companies, including H+H..

A recent increase in production demands at H+H required a new appraisal of wet processes that were at risk of becoming bottlenecks. In this three-way partnership, Alexander Whinfrey-Gibson, an engineering apprentice from the AMRC Training Centre, Atlantic Pumps and H+H undertook an initiative that significantly enhanced pump reliability.

This resulted in substantial cost savings, energy optimisations, and efficiency gains that enable H+H Pollington plant to scale up it’s production capacity in a sustainable way. On the strength of this latest success story, H+H and Atlantic Pumps are committed to continued participation in the AMRC apprentice training scheme, strengthening engineering skills and sharing best new practices across the wider industrial and engineering fields.
