Filter presses are used for large batch dewatering of sludges containing fine silt, such as clay slip, or quarry water. Traditionally, Filter Presses were powered by a single high-pressure pump which slowly filled the press, eventually reaching the high pressure required to dewater the sludge by expelling the water through the filter cloth.

Atlantic Pumps supply their filter-press feed systems to press manufacturers and optimise client’s existing filter-presses to gain more throughput and efficiency. This time and energy-saving approach utilises a two-stage system with two different pump types. A high-volume, wear-resistant centrifugal slurry pump makes quick work of the first ‘fill stage’ and a Positive Displacement Pump takes over for the second stage, delivering the final high-pressure requirement.

This novel, but simple approach enables each pump type to operate within its optimum efficiency range – the centrifugal pump reduces the cycle time and operates close to its Best Efficiency Point (BEP), and the PD pressure pump runs at it’s designed duty. This results in faster-turnaround cycles, less maintenance, better energy savings, and longer pump life.

As each situation is different, there is no single product that covers all volume, pressure and site operational needs. Our technical sales team can put together a bespoke system to improve outcomes from your existing filter-press assets, please get in contact with us to discuss your requirements.
