PROJECT OVERVIEW

Through an ongoing, multi-year collaboration with this major construction materials manufacturer, Atlantic Pumps has upgraded the pump systems at their key aggregate wharfs.

Focusing on the client’s need for reliability, long-term performance, and sustainable outcomes, the result has been a notable reduction in downtime, maintenance, and energy consumption across site.

The Challenge

Handling abrasive sand slurries and saline water brings corrosion and mechanical wear risks across the site. Working with the process and engineering managers, it was decided to prioritise the following specific operational challenges:

Abrasive Grit in Bagging Plant Sumps: Drainage collection pits beneath the bagging lines collect runoff water with highly abrasive grit and fines. Standard sump pumps suffered rapid impeller erosion and premature seal failures, risking pit overflow and requiring repetitive manual interventions.

Thickener Tank Sludge Removal: Thickened sludge transfer duties required moving high-viscosity, abrasive media. Positive-displacement pumps are good for thick pastes, but most designs can’t tolerate abrasiveness: centrifugal pumps can be good on wear, but suffer with higher viscosity fluids.

Continuous River Abstraction: Supplying reliable process water to the plant demanded high-efficiency intake pumps capable of dealing with fluctuating river conditions, often with suspended silt. Continuous uptime with runtime cycles to match production schedules and abstraction licencing requirements.

The Threat of Costly Downtime: In a fast-moving aggregate terminal, an unpredicted pump failure risks halting production lines, backing up logistics, and causing compliance breaches. The site team needed rapid access to reliable wear parts—backed by specialist technical advice.

Desired Outcomes

Reduce maintenance interventions and prevent premature wear and pump burnout.

Optimise energy-use, reduce wastage and reduce costs long-term.

Eliminate seal leakage and high maintenance on viscous slurry transfer applications.

Secure a rapid-turnaround supply partner capable of providing same-day emergency response and long-term application engineering, to maximise uptime.

The Solution

Atlantic Pumps adopted an application-first, brand-agnostic engineering approach, auditing individual duty points to configure equipment engineered specifically for the media handled. Rather than narrowing supply to a single manufacturer’s catalogue, Atlantic deploy tailored technologies grounded in the core values of speed, technical simplicity, and reliability.

Key Solutions Implemented:

  • Audex AW 3-370 Pro for Bagging Sump Duty: Engineered specifically for abrasive mineral slurries, the AW Pro features high-chrome wet-end components, an integral agitator to prevent settled solids from compacting, and double mechanical seals housed in an oil bath.
  • Industrial Peristaltic Pump for Thickener Underflow: For abrasive, dense slurry duties, this positive displacement pump keeps fluid fully isolated inside a heavy-duty reinforced hose. This eliminates abrasive seal failures and cuts servicing time – by both long-lasting parts and easy hose replacement.
  • River Abstraction & Water Supply Pumps: High-efficiency 6kW Audex submersible centrifugal pumps, sized to handle 1.5 – 2m suction variance from tidal currents and deliver dependable, continuous intake with low energy draw.
  • Emergency Response Support: A responsive support model providing same-day to next-day delivery of drainage pumps for immediate contingency situations.

RESULTS

The long-term partnership has delivered measurable operational, financial, and environmental benefits.

  • Eliminating Sump Overflows: The Audex AW 3-370 Pro reliably handles continuous grit run-off, helping prevent premature seal failures and costly unplanned line shutdowns.
  • Thickened Sludge Transfer: The 4″ peristaltic pump provides controllable, blockage-free sludge draw-off with a low rotational speed, drastically cutting routine maintenance and energy wastage. The only wet part is the abrasion-resistant hose, which quick to change when the time comes around.
  • Agility and Peace of Mind: Atlantic Pumps’ good stock holding has enabled 2” submersible pumps on same-day delivery emergency response, while the pump technicians and technical team bring deep experience in pumping abrasive media. This ensures that operational interruptions are engineered out and unexpected site challenges are solved within hours, safeguarding operational throughput.

Alignment around our core values:

  • Think and Act Long-Term: Moving from expendable commodity pumps to heavy-duty, high-chrome wear assets extends Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and reduces TOTEX/Total Cost of Ownership.
  • Sustainable Resource Management: Correct hydraulic sizing and controlled river abstraction ensure efficient water usage, supporting environmental and circular economy targets. Longer-lasting pumps (and parts) maximises outputs from inputs.
  • Doing What’s Best for the Customer: A customer-focused, duty-first specification philosophy ensures the optimal tool is used for each individual application.
