Here’s why misalignment can be surprisingly destructive:

1. Mech Seal Destruction: Misalignment forces the shaft to flex dynamically on every single revolution. This uneven loading across the mechanical seal faces disrupts the microscopic fluid film as the seal faces tilt and bounce. End result; chipped faces, slurry ingress, and costly leaks.

2. Coupling Breakage: Even flexible couplings are forced to constantly compress and flex – generating repetitive ‘knocks’ at every turn. While a flexible coupling greatly extends the life of the shaft, this relentless cycle generates internal friction and heat. Misalignment speeds up elastomer degradation, while metallic components suffer fatigue cracking and bolt shear.

3. Bearing Overload: The dynamic forces generated by forced offset transfer severe radial and axial loads directly into the bearings. This dramatically reduces bearing life and leads to vibration and heat.

Key warning signs to look for:

• Black dust or rubber debris inside or underneath the coupling guard
• Elevated vibration levels (particularly at 1x and 2x running speed)
• Unexplained high temperatures on bearing housings
• Repeated mechanical seal or packing failures within a short timeframe
• Hold-down/foundation bolts continually working themselves loose.

How to eliminate misalignment:

• Move beyond the straightedge: Switch from a ruler or visual eyeing-up, to precision laser alignment tools.
• Eliminate ‘Soft Foot’: Check that all pump frame and motor feet sit perfectly flat on the baseplate. Shim-pack before tightening down holding bolts.
• Avoid pipe strain: Never force pipework into place using the flange bolts. Support pipes independently from the pump.
• Thermal expansion: Allow for expected thermal offset and recheck alignment immediately after the first shift.
